A Passion Pursued
Pierce Conway, devout Carolina fan and freshman at UNC, boasts court-side bleacher seats to every UNC home game this season. Conway is an avid member of Carolina Fever, a student organization based on supporting university athletic events.
Conway has attended everything from field hockey games to rugby matches in an effort to accrue enough points to eventually get tickets to the coveted Duke game later this season.
While Conway can be seen cheering on ESPN sporting a Carolina blue wig and matching warpaint, he also can be found behind his computer on the ESPN website reading article after article on the latest sports news.
"I could spend my whole day on there," Conway joked as he talked about the amount of time he spends checking stats and reading about his favorite teams on ESPN's web page.
Conway, however, is more than just a fan of the games he cheers for. Not only has he played sports competitively since the young age of four, but he has been writing about them since he created his first blog, "College Basketball," in 2007.
The combination of playing a variety of intramural sports, including basketball and hockey, and being enrolled in a news writing course, has once again sparked his interest in blogging about collegiate basketball.
"College basketball is my passion and I enjoy talking about it to other people so writing about it comes naturally to me."
With the experience of writing sport feature stories for his highschool newspaper, it is no surprise that Pierce has now landed a job at the Daily Tar Heel as a sports news reporter.
Translating free throws into features and shot clock seconds into sentences are just some of the talents that this self-acclaimed sports fanatic brings to the table, or in his case, the court.
With his first manadatory DTH meeting coming up this Friday, Conway is dissapointed because he will have to miss this new-member orientation for his "next biggest passion"-- helping people.
Pierce will be going on a weekend trip to the mountains of North Carolina to help build homes for low-income families in the area.
He said that he has gone on trips like this before and truely enjoys helping those who are less fortunate.
Between his dedication to sports and his love for activism, Conway has prooved to be a source for sports entertainment and hardwork on and off the court.
